Artest leads Rockets past Warriors

01/31/2009 - Houston, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Ron Artest led all scorers with 27 points and totaled seven rebounds with as many assists to help lead the Houston Rockets to a 110-93 triumph over the Golden State Warriors at the Toyota Center.

Yao Ming had 25 points and 11 rebounds while Aaron Brooks came off the bench to score 22 and hand out a game-high nine assists for the Rockets, who resumed a three-game homestand and moved to 1-1 following a loss to Philadelphia on Wednesday.

Carl Landry chipped in 17 points and eight boards in 20-plus minutes off the bench with Tracy McGrady sidelined with a sprained left ankle.

The Rockets, who are 16-6 at home on the year, will finish their homestand with a bout against Chicago on Tuesday.

Corey Maggette led the way with 17 points and Stephen Jackson had 16 with five assists for the Warriors, who were looking to build on an impressive win against New Orleans but finished off their three-game road trip 1-2 instead.

Jamal Crawford added 14 points and C.J. Watson 12 in the loss.

Houston took an 81-75 lead in the fourth quarter and started things off with a Von Wafer three-pointer before a Luis Scola jumper and three straight points from Landry just shy of the midway point provided a 14-point advantage.

The Warriors cut the lead to single digits a short time later but an Artest triple followed by a fade-away jump shot made it a 105-89 game with 1:39 left and the Rockets easily prevailed from there.

Houston took a 25-20 lead by closing out the opening quarter with a 9-2 run and Landry dropped through a pair of field goals to open the second for a nine-point advantage.

Golden State pulled back within three, 31-28, on a pair of three-pointers from Watson and Anthony Morrow but the Rockets surged back in front by 10 with an 11-4 run from there with Brooks providing six of those points.

The Warriors, though, climbed back within two, 53-51, at the break as Houston went the final six-plus minutes with just two field goals. Watson scored seven points over the final 3:19 and finished off the half with a long- distance shot.

The lead traded hands for most of the third quarter before the Rockets used an 11-2 surge to reestablish control with three minutes left, when Brooks completed a three-point play for a 79-71 affair.

FOOTBALL BETTING : Cassel Signs Contract

Kansas City, MO - Kansas City has not officially named Matt Cassel its starting quarterback, but there can be no doubt now.

After praising his leadership and work ethic through spring workouts, the Chiefs announced Tuesday they had signed the 27-year-old Cassel to a multiyear contract. Terms were not disclosed, but he will almost certainly be one of the highest-paid members of the team.
"We are excited to be able to reach a long-term agreement for Matt Cassel to be a Kansas City Chief for many years to come," owner and board chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement. "His proven leadership on and off the field will be a tremendous asset to the organization."
Patriots made him their franchise player, meaning his salary for this season will be about $15 million.
New head coach Todd Haley, taking over for Herm Edwards after a 2-14 season, refused to name a starter at any position during offseason workouts. But it was obvious to everyone the team belonged to Cassel.
"I go out there each and every day with that focus that I'm the starter," Cassel said during a June minicamp. "Competition brings out the best in everybody."
The signing will come as welcome news to Cassel's new coaches and teammates. Amiable and hardworking, online football betting he appeared to win over everyone at minicamp.

Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli, who had been Bill Belichick's assistant in New England, engineered the trade after the Patriots became convinced that Brady would recover fully from his knee operation.
"Since Matt arrived in Kansas City, he has embraced the team and the community," Pioli said. "His work ethic, his ability and competitive presence is what we expect from our players."
